Gillen accepted into Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research’s Mentoring Academy

A Mississippi State University faculty member is a member of the 2023-24 cohort of the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research’s Mentoring Academy.

Zachary Gillen, an assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology, is among a class of early-career faculty members and investigators from other colleges and universities in the state who are developing mentoring skills through sessions facilitated by established faculty members.

As the director of MSU’s Resistance Exercise Performance Laboratory, Gillen’s research aims to understand the underlying mechanisms leading to increases in muscle strength and power in various populations, primarily through the use of noninvasive techniques.

“I’m excited to learn how to be a better mentor through the academy and apply these best practices and strategies to my lab,” said Gillen. “I had great mentors at both universities I attended, and they played huge roles in my professional development. Seeing the impact they had on my journey is inspiring, and I look forward to using the insight I gain from the academy to help me be an effective mentor to my students.”

The Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research is a multi-institution research enterprise focused on major diseases impacting Mississippians with the mission of reducing cardiometabolic-related diseases and obesity in the state.
