A Mississippi State University music education major was recently awarded a teacher preparation scholarship from the Mississippi Professional Educations (MPE).

Quinlan Gray, a senior from DeKalb Texas, was awarded the Linda Anglin Teacher Preparation Scholarship this semester, and will officially be recognized by MPE at a later date. The scholarship is awarded annually to MPE student memberships who will student teach during the spring of 2020 or the 2020-2021 academic year.

Department of Music head, Dr. Barry Kopetz, who nominated Gray, said that Gray is a hard-working and dedicated student, whose drive will make him successful in his future teaching career.

“Quin Gray is a classic example of a student who will be successful as the result of his own personal perseverance,” Kopetz said. “He takes advantage of every opportunity to learn, and his work ethic is of the highest caliber. These traits will serve him well as he pursues his teaching career in instrumental music.”

In addition to the award $500 scholarship, Gray also received a complimentary membership to the MPE for his first year of teaching.

Gray was the 2019 Keyone Docher Achievement Award winner, a scholarship given each year by the MSU Mitchell Memorial Library. Studying the trumpet for over eight years, Gray has performed with MSU’s Trumpet Consort, Dixieland and Jazz ensembles, and Symphonic and Concert bands, among other groups. He currently serves as the student assistant band director at Starkville Academy and has engaged in research on music education and plans to pursue a graduate degree in wind conducting following graduation in May 2020.
