MSU’s Anthony promoted to colonel in Mississippi Army National Guard

STARKVILLE, Miss.—Kenneth Anthony’s leadership goes beyond the halls of Mississippi State. The professor and head of MSU’s Department of Teacher Education and Leadership is now a colonel in the Mississippi Army National Guard.

Major General Bobby M. Ginn, Jr., adjutant general of Mississippi, recently promoted Anthony to the rank of colonel of the 154th Regiment Regional Training Institute. During the formal ceremony, Anthony’s sisters Deena and Lorie pinned the new rank on his uniform while the 41st Army Band provided music.

“It’s my honor to serve our state and nation as an officer in the Mississippi Army National Guard,” Anthony said. “I’m ever thankful for the support I receive from MSU that allows me to continue to serve.”

Anthony has a long history of miliary service, including three years with the U.S. Army Reserve and 34 years with the Mississippi Army National Guard. His awards include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, NATO Medal, Air Assault Badge, Combat Infantry Badge and Combat Action Badge.

“Dr. Anthony’s commitment to service, both in the classroom and in the military, is an inspiration to our students, faculty and alumni,” said Teresa Jayroe, dean of the College of Education. “His leadership exemplifies the values we strive to instill in future educators: dedication, integrity and a heart for service.”

During the 2022-23 academic year, Anthony attended the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, where he graduated with distinction and earned a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies. He also holds a doctoral degree in secondary education from MSU as well as a master’s degree in gifted education and bachelor’s degree in history from Mississippi University for Women.
