STARKVILLE, Miss.—MSU Opera recently presented “Opera Fusion,” a collaborative production between students and directors blending opera and musical theatre.
The concert featured a chronological presentation of 13 Broadway and opera performances including “You Could Drive a Person Crazy” from Company by Stephen Sondheim, “After You, Madam” from The Marriage of Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and “Fare You Well” from the Barber of Seville by Gioachino Rossini.

“Opera Fusion has been an incredibly rewarding experience for our students and for the Department of Music as a whole,” said Roza Tulyaganova, the program’s artistic director. “It provided a unique opportunity for collaboration across disciplines, allowing students—both music majors and non-music majors—to grow artistically, develop new skills and bring powerful stories to life on stage. Watching them take ownership of the creative process was truly inspiring.”
The show involved heavy student-faculty collaboration, from setup and production to the performances. It also provided students an experiential learning opportunity, enabling them to learn the Italian language as they prepared to perform the operas.
The concert was held in MSU’s Music Building Recital Hall on April 22 and 24 and was sponsored by MSU’s Department of Music in association with the MSU Opera.
