Exploring Secondary Science Education Day

STARKVILLE, Miss.—Approximately 30 high school seniors and juniors explored innovative methods for teaching science while on a recent campusvisit to Mississippi State University. Directed by Christina McDaniel, Instructor/Undergraduate Advisor for the College of Education’s Secondary Science Education program, the event proved to be quite the success for the newcomers.  Secondary Science Education faculty modeled teaching of engaging science activities such as balloon kebabs, pigment chromatography, forensic science and more. Students who attended were then treated to lunch by the department of Admissions and Scholarships. Students wrapped-up the event by participating in a question and answer session direct to a panel of current senior level secondary science methods students, teacher interns, graduate students, experienced high school science teachers, and education faculty. Assisting in helping with the event were graduate student Shana Lee and Science Education Program Coordinator Ryan Walker.  One participating student said, “I can feel the passion all of you (MSU Secondary Science Education faculty, graduate and undergraduate students) have for teaching science. I know this is where I want to go to college.” This event is also planned to be held in the spring 2017 semester.
