Master's Programs in Counseling

The deadline for application to the five Counseling master's programs  is March 15 each year.  Applicants are requested to submit the following:

  1. Completed application for graduate studies at Mississippi State University.  Please identify one of the four counseling  programs as the sub-specialty: (a) Community Counseling, (b) Rehabilitation Counseling (c) School Counseling, or (d) Student Affairs Counseling.  The "statement of purpose" is used to evaluate writing proficiency.  Applicants are urged to use a word processor when completing the "statement of purpose."

  2. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores. The GRE  must have been taken within the last 5 years.  There is no minimum GRE score per se. Each applicant's GRE score is compared with other applications in a particular program area.

  3. Official undergraduate transcript.  There is a required minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.75.  However, most applicants have an overall GPA of 3.00 or higher.

  4. Three letters of reference.

  5. A resume containing a summary of volunteer experience, leadership positions, work experience, and additional information which reflects your interest in the counseling profession.  This information is used in determining "goodness of fit" with the department.

The departmental faculty process applications once a year during early April.  Applicants are ranked according to (a) overall GPA [30%], (b) GPA in challenging coursework [5%], (c) overall GRE scores [25%], (d) analytic GRE score [5 %], (Writing Skills (10%), Experience/Volunteer Work/Letters of Reference (15%), Goodness of Fit (10%).  Twelve to fifteen new master's students may be accepted in each of the four programs.    For additional information about the four programs contact:
